Twitter: What’s it Good For? What will YOU use it for?

Filed under: Life, Love, Technology — Bruce @ 4:47 pm

In general terms, I would describe Twitter as a….

Stream of Thought Microblogging

… tool.

It allows you (or anyone) to post little one-liner messages (up to 140 characters)… and for others (anyone, and as many as want to) to receive them…. any way they want to… via SMS text message on their cellphone, being the most popular way… or via email, or web site, or in any of a dozen other ways…. all for absolutely FREE.

As with any new technology….

It can be fun… interesting… amusing… maybe even mildly entertaining…

But, in the end, everyone always ends up asking themselves,

“Yeah…. But what practical use could I possibly put it to?”

The reality is….

The Collective Consciousness of Humanity will figure out its Highest and Best Uses

Twitter — when you describe it to people — sounds like a high-tech toy….

Something for teenagers who have more time on their hands, than sense… A sort of mobile chat room for people who are bored out of their minds…. to assist them in boring other people out of their minds too…

HOWEVER….

Upon closer inspection by the masses… and the Collective Consciousness….

Thousands of new uses are developing for it…. DAILY!

The massive earthquake in Mexico City was reported on Twitter a full 8 minutes BEFORE any news agency in the world got the story…

Kevin Rose, the host of the most popular internet television show in the world, Diggnation, now has 65,527 people “following” him on Twitter… at this very moment. Wait. Let me check again…. No, now it’s 65,529 people. The point is: Every time Kevin Rose has a thought, he “tweets” about it…. and….

65,529 people on the planet get Kevin’s thought instantly — as soon as he thinks it.

Whether it comes in as a text message on their cellphone, in their email, or on the web site…. That’s a LOT of people.

In other words, famous people (and companies) are using it as a Broadcasting Tool.

And that’s only the beginning…

There are now search tools…. allowing you to search the Twitter Public Timeline (all tweets are public, by the way)…

This means that, if Jason and deMarco want to know what “people are saying about them”… They can simply use a tool to search for and find EVERY tweet containing the phrase, “Jason and deMarco”….

Hmmm…. Think about THAT for a second.

You can get — ANYONE can get — an instantaneous “finger on the pulse” of “what people are thinking and saying about”……… you name it!

THAT is powerful information.

With tools like…

twittervision.com
twittermap.com/maps
twittersearch.com/search
tweetbeep.com
google.com/alerts
flickrvision.com
spinvision.tv
kiva.org/kivavision

.. and dozens and dozens of other such tools…. the list goes on.

With these new technologies, used in all sorts of combinations… the possibilities are limited only to…

The Imagination of the Collective Consciousness of Humanity

wow!

What uses does twitter have BEYOND the obvious…?

I invite you to…. Really think it through….

What will YOU use it for?

‘One Laptop per Child’ to Switch from Linux to Windows?

As posted to our Ubuntu users Meetup forum, by Jay:

One Laptop Per Child may eventually switch from GNU/Linux to Windows

http://truthhappens.redhatmagazine.com/2008/04/23/sigh/

It seems like locking kids minds into proprietary frames still remains a priority for the educators.

So here is…  My email correspondence with OLPC just now…

____

To: press@racepointgroup.com

Is it true that OLPC will be switching from a Linux OS to a Windows OS?

If so, you guys are pathetic, and I need to know so I can withdrawal all my support for the OLPC project as soon as possible.

Bruce Wagner

____

From: press@racepointgroup.com

This is not true.  OLPC will support both Linux and Windows.  Governments have been asking for both.

____

To: press@racepointgroup.com

That is NOT ok.

See http://linux.meetup.com/392/messages/boards/thread/4635205

And http://truthhappens.redhatmagazine.com/2008/04/23/sigh/

It it self-defeating to go down a proprietary closed corporate path like Windows.   It is also self-defeating to split your resources in half between two separate development paths.   Windows has no future in a program such as OLPC.  Your role is EDUCATION, not backing down to special interests and corporate greed.

Don’t cave in to anyone.   Stick to FREEDOM — open source free software, not corporate interests — if you hope or expect to get any support from the global community.

Free Yourself from the Proprietary Corporate Greed of ‘Big Brother’: Microsoft, Apple, etc.

Always choose the superior Open Source Free Software.

Now, there is an equivalent or superior Free Open Source version of all the best software that exists.

Do you use Ubuntu Linux on your PC and laptop yet?

Google does.  Did you know that Google’s search engines are all running 100% on Linux?  Not Windows.  Not Mac.  Only Linux.  Does Google know something you don’t know?

You can even install Ubuntu Linux on a Windows computer without changing a thing — all for free.  It takes about 2.5 minutes, and is as easy as three clicks, using Wubi — the Windows Ubuntu Installer.  Try it here!

Check out each of these links carefully:

A. http://tinyurl.com/552×66 |  B. http://tinyurl.com/67hjz5 |  C. http://getgnulinux.org |  D. http://ubuntu.com |  E. http://wubi-installer.org |  F. http://ubuntuforums.org

Feel Like a Movie Tonight?

It’s the best way to find an awesome movie to watch…

I’ve always believed in the Viewers’ Ratings of movies on Yahoo Movies.  That’s how I decide if a movie is going to be any good or not.

I don’t even want to know what it’s about.  If the VIEWERS rating is high, it will be great.

Warning:  Totally ignore the CRITICS Rating.  They are almost always Wrong!

Here is…

How to Have an Awesome Movie to Watch Tonight:

  1. THIS is an AWESOME Link:  Go to  Top Rated Movies of All Time (by VIEWERS):     (Bookmark this link!)
  2. Note:  If you have Windows, you must have already installed the utorrent program once.  If you haven’t yet, just go to utorrent.com and click on Download to install it.  It is free, and tiny.  This is a one-time thing.  (Of course, if you have the superior Ubuntu instead of Windows or Mac, you don’t need to install anything.  It’s all built-in.  And if you have a Mac, go here to get a bittorrent client instead.)
  3. Go to mininova.org and enter the name of the movie you want.  Be sure to check that it is in the proper format that your computer or player can play (or burn to DVD, then play).  Click on Download Torrent.  As you download the torrent file, select:  “Open With: uTorrent”
  4. Buy some popcorn and you’re ready!

That’s it!

You’re done.

Yet Another Reason to NOT buy Vista

…as if we needed one.

Microsoft’s Media Center Does Not Record Television Shows from NBC

Microsoft has come out with an astounding admission, courtesy of Greg Sandoval at CNet News:

“Microsoft included technologies in Windows, based on rules set forth by the (Federal Communications Commission),” a Microsoft spokeswoman wrote in an e-mail to CNET News.com. “As part of these regulations, Windows Media Center fully adheres to the flags used by broadcasters and content owners to determine how their content is distributed and consumed.”

What’s 7 Inches Long and Rocking the World?

Filed under: Asus, Eee PC, Life, Technology — Bruce @ 12:18 pm

eeepc

I have to say…

It looks amazing.

They have finally made a tiny form facter — applicance PC — combined with all the wonderfulness of Ubuntu and the entire open source universe…

It’s awesome!

.

Click here for a cool interactive demo.

.

The Asus Eee PC

Well, my itsy bitsy teeny weenie seven inch Asus Eee PC finally arrived with the relatives visiting for fiesta season. I had bought it in the US six months ago, but it was back-ordered and not delivered on time. So my grandson Luke has been using it in the meanwhile.

I bought this one at Amazon…selling for $360 or so.

This is the one with only a five gig flash drive and a seven inch screen. It also uses Ubuntu, not windows. No problem. I use Ubuntu on my laptop too, and unless you are into gaming, it’s easy to use.

Newer models by ASUS have Windows XP, a larger drive, and even larger screens.

So what are the advantages?

One: It’s small and light. (32 oz–about one kg) Will fit into my purse.

Two: sort of a super palm-pocket: enough room to store a diary, information, email, etc. But it also plays music and lets you talk to your friends using the webcam.

When you turn it on, it boots quickly. Opening page is internet icons. One is to connect to the Internet, and I just programmed that to automatic, and it found the right numbers.

But once you do that, it signs on automatically. Or you can hit the “wireless” icon and it will connect to any nearby signal.

Other icons are fast links to the internet: Google, mail programs, Skype, Wikipedia, Internet Radio, and Google Documents. One click and you’re there.

The Wireless connection doesn’t pick up the signal as well as my laptop: If I surf the net from my bedroom, the signal is only 30% from the router in my son’s office. I can pick that weak signal up on my laptop, but the ASUS won’t. But it works fine sitting outside in the garden.

For web surfing, it uses Firefox, which is as easy as Microsoft explorer and I used it routinely with our Windows computers.

Then if you want to work on the computer, there are lots of nice tabs at the top of the page.

Number two tab says “WORK”.

It includes “Open Office” for word processing, spread sheets, and presentations. It includes a pdf reader, note pad, and a mail program,”accessories” and a dictionary.
I used to use the Microsoft mail program with Outlook at work, but could never figure out how to use it on my laptop, so I can’t tell you about that one. The “accessories” includes a “Personal Information manager” which essentially is the same as Outlook: It has mail, calendar, diary, to do list, etc.

The next tab is “learn”: Except for the periodic table, not something I care about.

Tab 4 is “PLAY”.

There is a mp3 etc. player, a media player, a web cam and a sound recorder. One of these days I’ll play with these, but my grandson Luke said they were neat…

Since there isn’t much disc space for music, one might ask why a media player a movie player? Well, I downloaded an AVI movie to my thumb drive and watched it. Tiny, but it did play.

One can attach a thumb drive (MP3 or flash drive) via the USB port, or one can place a memory card in another slot for more storage. Alas, my palmpocket memory card doesn’t fit.

Finally, it has a nice battery (Worked for three hours). And the case is hard plastic, so it’s rugged for traveling.

So what don’t I like?

I am a sixty word a minute touch typist. The tiny keyboard drives me nuts.

The speakers are too weak to hear in noisy environments.

And the print is small.

But if you travel, want to take a tiny computer that does most basic things, and don’t have a lot of money, it’s something to look into.

For a little more money you can get Windows XP, a larger screen and a larger flash disk. I’d do that if it were my only computer and if I had more money. But as a spare backup computer to travel with, I’m pleased.

Addendum: When my granddaughter saw that ASUS was now selling in the Philippines she wants one…

How to be an Instant Expert on the Topic of your Choice

Filed under: Life, Technology — Bruce @ 11:02 am

Two Very Cool Ways to Stay Informed

First, if you’re really interested in a certain topic, you can receive email updates of the latest YouTube videos related to your topic of interest. There is a really cool free service called RSSFWD.com that will let you subscribe to any RSS feed via email.  (You can later unsubscribe any time you like, with a single click.)  That, combined with YouTube’s RSS Feed for a single “tag”, makes a powerful combination.

Here’s how:

Think of the one word that best describes your topic of interest.  As an example, if you’re really interested in “iPhone”, or “Oprah”, or “Ubuntu”, or “Obama”, or “juggling”.  It doesn’t matter what it is.

Simply replace the word “ubuntu” in the following web address, and go to that address.

For example, if you’re really interested in “Ubuntu”, simply click on this link:

http://rssfwd.com/rssfwd/preview?email=&pre=true&return_to=http%3A%2F%2Frssfwd.com%2F&submit+url=Submit&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Frss%2Ftag%2Fubuntu.rss

If you’re interested in “juggling”, change the word “ubuntu” in the link like this:

http://rssfwd.com/rssfwd/preview?email=&pre=true&return_to=http%3A%2F%2Frssfwd.com%2F&submit+url=Submit&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Frss%2Ftag%2Fjuggling.rss

Do you see the word “juggling” toward the end of that link?  Yeah.  That’s the word you change to your own topic of interest.

You get the idea.

Now, on the resulting page, just enter your email address.  It’s that simple.

Every email update you get will also have a link at the bottom to instantly unsubscribe, if you later change your mind.

The Second tool is not new, but it’s extremely powerful…  and often overlooked.

It’s called Google Alerts.

Simply go to http://www.google.com/alerts and enter the word, or words, that describe your topics of most interest.

It’s amazingly powerful.

And addictive.

Enjoy.

What’s the Difference between Real Life and The Internet?

Filed under: Comedy, Internet Freedom, Life, Technology — Bruce @ 4:28 pm

Dimensions of the One Machine

Today it contains approximately 1.2 billion personal computers,  2.7 billion cell phones, 1.3 billion land phones, 27 million data servers, and 80 million wireless PDAs. The processor chips of all these parts are feeding the computation of the internet/web/telecommunications system.  (the technium)

How did we go from — January 1982, when we created…  The very first version of the Internet was nothing more than an experimental “TCP/IP Test Network”.  (wiki)  Here is the map of of that first original “test network” we now call The Internet…

~

And now, our entire lives have transformed…

~

~

Or click here.

And more…

~

~

Or click here.

In many ways our lives seem to have BECOME the internet…   As demonstrated in the following video, which is based on a true story.

~

~

Or click here.

UPDATE: As you can see, YouTube removed this video “due to a copyright claim by Viacom International Inc.”  Viacom is really stupid and short-sighted for doing that.  The viral spreading of that short video clip would only have resulted in MILLIONS more people watching that episode of South Park when it finally does air.  Anyway…

This clip, called “No Internet“, WILL become available again VERY SOON.  You can count on it.  Someone will upload it again.  And as as soon as it is available, you will find it here:

  1. Google Video Search, or
  2. with commercials at the South Park Studios Official Site

~

The Internet has all but completely replaced our old-fashioned customs of social interchange.  With the invention of so-called “Social Networking” sites, we no longer need to go to cocktail parties or singles clubs to meet people.  We are automatically introduced to friends of our real-life friends, as well as being able to browse through virtual catalogs of complete strangers who have things in common with us — or at least appear to be physically attractive to us.

~

~

Or click here.

As The Internet quickly becomes the world’s number one entertainment media network, it was bound to happen.  We have a whole new breed of “stars”.  Video Stars who have become globally famous overnight.  And are forgotten almost as fast — without ever earning a cent from their fame.

~

~

Or click here.

However, as the following video humorously illustrates, the number one use of the Internet is…

Well, let me put it this way.

Try doing a Google search for: US Virgin Islands

What do you get?

Results 110 of about 218,000,000 for porn

“Pornographer!   Pornographer!   How can you call me that?!?   I don’t even own a pornograph!”

~

~

Or click here.

In the future…   Imagine what it will be like…  when all these little kids, who wear born and grew up in an Internet world, are the adults designing the future…

New Gmail Feature Request: Delete Bad Addresses right from the Returned Mail Message Itself

Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 9:23 am

I would LOVE to see the following new feature..

I’d love to be able to Delete bad addresses from my Contacts right while looking at the Returned Mail Message.

You do a mailing to a large group of friends…

One or two comes back,

“Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently”

I would LOVE to be able to hover my mouse over that BAD email address, and get the option to DELETE CONTACT, or DELETE THIS EMAIL ADDRESS from the contact’s record….  directly while looking at the “Mail Delivery Subsystem” returned email….

Without having to copy the email address, go to Contacts, and then Search for the address….  just to Delete that contact…

GTD and your Email Inbox

Filed under: GTD, Life, Technology — Bruce @ 10:08 pm

My solution to an email inbox that’s filled with reading material — newsletters, announcements, articles, etc…  is…

I call it my READING email account.

I NEVER allow subscriptions to newsletters to enter my normal email — only PERSONALLY composed messages from one person, to me.

All newsletter subscriptions, Google News Alerts, and RSS Feeds (courtesy of the magic of the free rssfwd.com), go to my READING EMAIL ACCOUNT.

My normal MESSAGING email account is bruce@my_own_name.com

My READING materials are sent to reading@my_own_name.com

That way,

(1)  If I don’t get a chance to look at the newsletter, it doesn’t really matter.  It’s still there if I need it.
(2)  If I’m in the mood to do some reading, it’s all in one place — and nothing else is there but reading.  And,
(3)  My normal email Inbox contains NOTHING but personal messages I need to deal with — no reading.

PS – I also have another email address, called todo@my_own_name.com

I forward all ToDo tasks to myself at that address.  Then, I have all of them in one place, so I can copy them all to my GTD lists en mass.

Dear Google…

Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 8:33 am

Your so-called “Help” functions need DRASTIC improvement.  This applies to ALL Google services across the board.  They are TERRIBLE.

They all need some SMART REAL HUMAN oversight.  For example, real, smart, human Google staffers should LIVE in the “Google Help Groups” (forums) and answer questions (correctly, accurately, thoughtfully, and completely) for customers directly, while funneling user feedback directly back to the Google developers at the same time.

Also, Gmail Contacts desperately needs excellent formatting of its PRINT CONTACTS function…  Right now, it is HORRIBLE.  Google Calendar has excellent PRINT CALENDAR function formatting.  The Gmail Contacts PRINT CONTACTS function is so bad that it is not consistent with the quality users expect from Google.  It is HORRIBLE!

You’ll LOVE how Wubi gives you Ubuntu on Windows

Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 7:45 pm

You GOTTA try this!

Just go to  wubi-installer.org

Download the free Wubi program for Windows.  Then, double-click it.  It will install as a free program for Windows.

You’ll LOVE how Wubi gives you Ubuntu on Windows!

And if you get tired of it…  And you don’t want it any more…  Just go to the Control Panel in Windows, click on Add/Remove Programs, and Uninstall it…   Super easy and clean.

But, of course, that’s not what’s going to happen.

What will happen is…  You’ll begin playing with all the software on it…  You’ll read my Windows vs. Ubuntu’s Best Applications page…   You’ll go to Ubuntu’s Add/Remove Applications menu, and install all sorts of cool new software on it…  all for free…, and…  You’ll NEVER be able to live without it again!

You’ll be so happy that you’ll never want to go back to crappy, slow, virus-ridden, buggy, Windows again.

My Letter to Michael Dell

Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 12:48 pm

Maybe you should send him one too…?

~~

Bruce Wagner

Friday, April 25, 2008

Michael Dell
Dell Computer
One Dell Way
Round Rock TX 78682

Dear Mr. Dell:

As a Dell customer, and potential continuing customer, I would like to give you some direct feedback.

(1) Your web site and telephone systems make it virtually IMPOSSIBLE to give you feedback.

– The web site only seems to allow feedback ABOUT the web site itself.

– The “Contact Us” pages allow only for Technical Support, Sales, etc. — no Customer Comments or Feedback.

– The telephone lines and live web chats all go to India, where they can barely spell the word “Dell”. I was redirected FOUR TIMES to different departments. First to the email support. Then to the Sales Live Chat. Then to the Customer Support by Telephone. Then, back to where I started, dell.com, to the web site’s Feedback button… which only allows for TWO CATEGORIES of communications: “Web Site Errors”, or “Web Site Feedback”. It’s ridiculous! It’s like you’re totally HIDING from your customers!

(2) To the “Customer Support” lady, in India, that I spoke with… My feedback was simply this: “We would like Dell to offer MORE computer models in the USA with Ubuntu Linux pre-installed.” She told me that my comment had been submitted. After, I asked her to spell the words “Ubuntu Linux” back to me. She said she had no idea what those words were… that I was saying. I told her, “Those words ARE my suggestion/feedback. If you did not get those two words, you did NOT get my suggestion.”

(3) A friend of mine bought a “Dell printer” for use with her Ubuntu laptop. It turns out that the Dell printer was, in fact, a Lexmark printer which works ONLY with its own proprietary software – and works ONLY with Windows – not Mac, and certainly not Ubuntu. I told her to return it and buy an HP printer. She is very happy now. Please don’t sell printers that do not work with the operating systems you sell – namely Ubuntu Linux.

Anyway, it is PATHETIC that I must type this letter to you and send it via old fashioned postal mail, in order for a Dell customer to get a message to you. It’s easier to contact Oprah Winfrey. I hope someone in the USA, who can read English, will read this letter…

Sincerely,

Bruce Wagner

And See  slydial.com

If you have long lists of calls to return, you just might get through them in HALF the time!

And don’t miss all the other amazing fun little things this company is also offering….  See mobile-sphere.com

Like joopz.com, for example….  which allows you to carry on multiple SMS text messaging chats with people from your computer.  It’s a web page and allows you to chat as if you were using Instant Messaging… with people who are using SMS text messaging on their cell phone…  Very slick!

Google Helps you Commit Fraud and Cheat People out of Their Valuables

Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 11:44 am

Here’s the Article…. straight from Google’s own Gmail site…

Google Helps you Commit Fraud and Cheat People out of Their Valuables

~

This Feature Makes Me Furious!

Introducing Gmail Custom Time™

Be on time. Every time.™

How do I use it?

Just click “Set custom time” from the Compose view. Any email you send to the past appears in the proper chronological order in your recipient’s inbox. You can opt for it to show up read or unread by selecting the appropriate option.

Among the Testimonials…

“I just got two tickets to Radiohead by being the ‘first’ to respond to a co-worker’s ‘first-come, first-serve’ email. Someone else had already won them, but I told everyone to check their inboxes again. Everyone sort of knows I used Custom Time on this one, but I’m denying it.”
And I have to admit…

I totally fell for it.

Go ahead.

Call me a sucker.

Call me naive.

You can even call me a fool.

Remember…

Today is April 1.

What does that tell you?

As soon as you hear Ringing Start, press 1 to go directly to Voicemail without actually Ringing his Phone!

Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 10:41 am

This is a concept FAR FAR overdue!!!

AS SOON AS YOU HEAR HIS PHONE START RINGING, PRESS 1 TO GO DIRECTLY TO VOICEMAIL WITHOUT RINGING HIM!

I propose that….

This should be a STANDARD for ALL telephones.

If a caller presses 1 while hearing your phone “ringing”, then he should be dumped directly into your voicemail. If he presses it fast enough (the moment he hears the first ring), then it should NOT EVEN RING YOUR PHONE at all….

This way EVERYONE could leave a voicemail for anyone…. without disturbing them…. For example, you KNOW the person is in a meeting…. Or you KNOW it’s too late or early to be calling him….

Google Wish List

Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 7:53 am

a_change_of_perception.jpg

Since Google makes it nearly IMPOSSIBLE for their users to give them Feedback about their products… (just directing them to forums where nobody from Google responds)…  and they don’t seem to listen anyway…   I decided to post my Feedback to Google here.   Maybe someday, somehow, it will get into the right hands.   Maybe someone at Google CARES, and CAN READ, and cares enough to let us know they are listening.   We’ll see…

In Random Order

  • In Gmail, I’d like to see a better formatted printout of my Contacts — something more equivalent to the quality of the printing of my daily/weekly/etc agenda in Calendar.  The printing ability of Gmail Contacts is VERY PRIMATIVE.  Also, it will only print one phone number.  And, when I enter two or more phone numbers for a contact, it insists on only printing their HOME number!  Geez!
  • In Gmail Contacts, once you have more than 27 Groups, the thing does not function properly.  You can no longer Remove a contact from a group… if that group’s name has scrolled off the bottom of the drop-down list.  (The drop-down list is NOT scrollable!)  Please, guys!  You’re supposed to be the brightest of the bright!?  Come on…  You do have enough money!
  • There needs to be a Contact (Address Book) interface for Mobile computing — just as you have for Calendar, Gmail, and Google Docs.   Hello!?   I DO need to look up my Contacts when I’m mobile…
  • Obviously, Google Docs is terrible.  It should at least have the functionality, fonts, formatting ability, of OpenOffice.  It’s clear that your priorities are NOT on applications.
  • In Google Calendar, there is an option to “Display only this Calendar”.  Hello?  There needs to be an “All” button at the top to instantly select ALL of your calendars again… so I don’t have to click 23 times to turn 23 calendars back on again each time.
  • Gmail needs the ability to SORT the email threads by Date order (or reverse), by Recipient/Sender Name, or by Subject.  This is really basic.  The most important one to me is — being able to make my email default to:  In the Order it was Received.   Is that too much to ask?  Who came up with this dogma that “newest first” was, not only a BETTER idea, but an idea worth FORCING us all to use…!?
  • And in Gmail…  Come on, Google Folks… We need to be able to resize the Compose text box…  to fit our different-sized monitors.  Take a look at the text box that WordPress.com has, for its blog owners to enter new posts.  It takes the maximum width that will fit…, and then it lets you resize it larger (vertically only) to make it taller… by dragging the lower-right-hand corner of the text box.  This is really basic stuff, people!  It’s 2008 now.
  • In Gmail’s Contacts…  When entering a new telephone number for someone, the only choices are:  Home, Work, Mobile, Home Fax, Work Fax, and Pager.  That’s not adequate.  There needs to also be:  Main, and Other.  How do I distinguish his Ekiga phone number and his GrandCentral.com phone number.  (Uhh hemm…  Doesn’t Google OWN GrandCentral.com now…?)
  • When looking up a Contact on the Mobile interface, some of the labels for the phone numbers CHANGE!  Huh!?  The number I entered as “Home Fax” is now listed as simply “Fax”, the number I entered as his “Home”, is now listed as just “Phone”.   And the number I entered as his “Work” number, is now all the way down at the bottom of the page…  Under the Work section…  And is just listed as “Phone” once again.   How confusing is that?!
  • In Contacts, we also need fields for all of the person’s various URLs.   This is the internet we’re using…

UPDATE: (March 25, 08) The Gmail Contacts / Address Book interface for Mobile…  is fixed! Honestly, I’m not sure if they fixed this recently…  Or I just noticed it recently…  One of the interesting things about web-based applications is that they can continuously improve (or make worse) the applications… without you even knowing what, when, where, and how they did it!  But here’s what I just now noticed:  From your iPhone (and presumably any other web-enabled mobile), you can go to Gmail.com.  From Gmail.com touch MENU (in the upper-left corner).  Wait a long time.  [NOTE: When touching buttons in these apps, you will need to WAIT A LONG TIME -- EVEN THOUGH IT SEEMS TO BE DOING NOTHING.  That's because they are using Ajax programming instead of normal basic web page calls.]  Once you get the “Menu”, touch CONTACTS.  Wait a long time.  Then, you will see your MOST CONTACTED people.  You can also enter any part of any name in the Search Contacts box at the bottom, if the person you want is not listed.  Now, for the great part…  You can now just TOUCH the person’s email address to email them…  Or…  Touch one of their telephone numbers to call them!

UPDATE 2: (March 25, 08)  Ok.  That’s really weird.  One hour later, and the appearance changed and there is no MENU button any more.  No matter how many times I refresh the page for Gmail.com on my iPhone.

UPDATE 3: (March 25, 08)  Now, 10 more minutes later, and the appearance is back to the way it was — with the Purple Title Bar at the top that says “Gmail”, and the “Menu” button on the left and the “Compose” button on the right.  Those two bars at the top are what was missing a few minutes ago — no matter how many times I refreshed the page to Gmail.com. Anyway, now they’re back.  I wonder if a transistion is taking place as we speak…  Or maybe there’s a fluke in the system.  Weird.

Have you ever Read your Windows License Agreement?

Filed under: Internet Freedom, Technology — Bruce @ 9:49 am

Check this out…

A thorough and clear comparison of the GPL and the Microsoft EULA license that governs the use of most Windows XP® versions.

The licence explicitly states that “Microsoft and its affiliates” collect technical information gathered on your computer by the software. They “may use this information solely to improve products or to provide customized services or technologies”.

In order to activate most Microsoft products, as part of the license agreement, your computer connects to the Microsoft servers and sends “technical” information. It can “solely” be used for pretty much anything.

Does the term “Community Developed” Scare People?

Filed under: Internet Freedom, Technology — Bruce @ 9:03 am

Here’s my email to the webmaster at ubuntu.com just now:

The very fist line… on the very first page…

When someone has NO IDEA what ubunutu is….  and they click on a link which takes them to ubuntu.com…. and they read,

ABOUT UBUNTU

“Ubuntu is a community developed…..”

I bet they have NO IDEA what the term “community developed” means.   And I bet that that term scares some people.

It almost sounds like the local PTA got together and wrote this thing last weekend.

I think that some other term, like “open source” might be better.   Even if they don’t know what it means, it shouldn’t scare them away.

For example:

“Ubuntu is an open source (free, as in freedom), Linux-based operating system that is perfect for…”

Just my 2 cents.

Happy Easter.

Nine Inch Nails made $1.6 million from new album offered as a free download on BitTorrent sites

Filed under: Internet Freedom, Technology — Bruce @ 2:29 pm

If you’re in the business of content creation, take note!

So-called “piracy” is your friend…

INDUSTRIAL band Nine Inch Nails has made $US1.6 million ($1.7 million) from an album offered as a free download and deliberately leaked to file-sharing websites.

The band released its sixth studio album, Ghosts I-IV, online on March 2. Fans could download the album for free, an extended version in high-quality for $US5 or order a copy on CD for $US10.

Two “deluxe” versions of the instrumental album featuring a Blu-ray disc and book of photography were available for $US75 and $US300.

Representatives of the band said on Friday that sales of all versions of the album had generated more than $US1.6 million in the first week, The New York Times reported.

In that time almost 800,000 people either bought the album or downloaded it for free.

Singer Trent Reznor said he was amazed at how popular the band’s first instrumental album had been. [story here]

Love Ubuntu and Have Suggestions for Improving it?

Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 11:22 am

ubuntu-690x90.jpg

If you’ve switched to Ubuntu… We already know that you’re in love with it.

And even if you’re still on your honeymoon with it… There is a chance that you’ll notice some little thing that you think could be improved.

Well, Ubuntu actually LISTENS to you.

For example, I noticed that when I freshly installed Ubuntu… and I visited a website that uses Java… Ubuntu prompted me to “install missing plug-ins”. However, a new user would very likely have no idea which one he should select. It listed “GCJ”, or “Java SE 6″, or “Java SE 5.0″, or “GCJ (using icedtea)”… Which one is the best choice?

I think that the system should tell you that one of those choices is “Recommended”… Or, at least, tell you why you might choose each of them… so a new user would have some information and be able to make an intelligent best choice based on his particular needs, desires, etc.

So… I did some research into…

How to Make a Suggestion for an Improvement to Ubuntu

Here’s what I learned…

The proper procedure for making a suggestion for improvement to Ubuntu, or any Ubuntu software, is to:

  1. Go to Ubuntu’s Launchpad Site, then
  2. Click the “Report a Bug” button (yes, they prefer suggestions to be reported this way), next
  3. Register (or Login if you’ve been there before), and then
  4. Enter a Summary (or Title) of your suggestion. They ask that you clearly mark it by starting the Summary with “Suggestion for Improvement:”. For example, for my suggestion, I called it, “Suggestion for Improvement: Why no Prompt Info? GCJ vs. GCJ (using ice tea) vs Sun Java – for Java browsing needs ?”. Click Continue.
  5. Unless you see the exact same Suggestion listed on the following page, click on “No, I’d like to report a new bug”, and
  6. Type in all the details about your Suggestion for the improvement of Ubuntu on the next screen. When finished, click “Submit Bug Report”

What’s Really Cool About It

…is that the Ubuntu development people will read and review your suggestion. It will get referred to the appropriate teams for their review and discussion, and the best part of all is — the whole entire process is open. Your suggestion will automatically be “tracked” every step of the way. And, unless you “unsubscribe” to it, you’ll be notified of all the follow-up discussion and actions that result from your suggestion!

Isn’t that cool!?

Imagine

…if you could submit a complaint to Comcast, about how they are now censoring the Internet content that their subscribers see… and automatically track every resulting discussion and action taken my upper management as a result of your complaint! (On second thought, you might not want to see how fast it was tossed into the virtual trash bin… :( )

Anyway… the point is…

YOU can play an active role in coming up with amazing cool new ideas for Ubuntu to include in future releases… Isn’t that exciting! And they do have perhaps THE fastest development cycle of any operating system — as they come out with an entirely new release every six months.

Not to worry… If you don’t want to re-install your operating system every 6 months… Ubuntu is updated automatically throughout its lifetime. Also, if you select an LTS (Long Term Support) version, it will automatically be updated and supported for a minimum of 3 years (desktop version) or 5 years (server version).

The Power Plant In Your Pants

Filed under: Life, Technology — Bruce @ 8:58 am

Scientists have developed a knee brace that captures energy from a moving knee, much like regenerative braking charges a battery in a Toyota Prius.

The device, jointly (hah!) developed by scientists at three universities, uses kinetic energy to generate electricity.

When the leg extends, energy spins gears on the device, which in turn power a built-in generator. Software determines at which point in each stride the generator should engage, and resistance from the engaged generator aids the wearer in slowing down the leg. See video of the knee in action.

Data on metabolic power supplied by the University of Michigan highlight the device’s efficiency:

Subjects required less than one watt of extra metabolic power for each watt of electricity they generated. A typical hand-crank generator, for comparison, takes an average of 6.4 watts of metabolic power to generate one watt of electricity because of inefficiencies of muscles and generators.

Scientists at the University of Michigan claim that walking can generate “enough electricity to operate a portable GPS locator, a cell phone, a motorized prosthetic joint or an implanted neurotransmitter.” They are working on trimming it down from its prototype weight of 3.5 pounds — the current size works as a proof-of-concept, but isn’t practical.

The Michigan team and colleagues at Simon Fraser University in Canada and the University of Pittsburgh also will need to work on the name of the device. If they want this thing to sell, they’ll have to come up with something snappier than “biomechanical energy harvester.” I like “The In-Your-Pants Power Plant” as a tagline — it’s memorable.

Next they should manufacture it in several colors, and make the housing washable. Knees get sweaty, after all. Finally, they should market the device to athletes, hikers/hunters/backpackers, and the military (make sure it comes in camo).

    The Magic “Answer to Every Question” Machine
    I know… You THINK you know all about this one. But it might surprise you to learn that, NO, you DON’T! That’s because they don’t understand the basics of how it works.People use Google to search the internet every day. However, most people have no idea of the POWER it offers… and how they can REALLY benefit from it. That’s because they don’t understand the basics of how Google works.The most important thing you must really understand is this:Google ranks everything in the entire world — by how important and relevant it is as of this very moment TODAYThe second thing they don’t realize is:Google can be used to quickly answer ALMOST ANY QUESTION instantly — with the best answer available in the worldHere’s how to use it properly:Every day, many questions pop in to your mind. Questions like:”Should I buy a 720p, a 1080i, or a 1080p HD TV set? What’s the difference anyway? And what’s the price difference?”Everyone under-utilizes Google. Every time you wonder about something… like…”I wonder if they ever came out with The Secret in Spanish yet?” Google: the secret en espanol” Google often. Google every question you find yourself asking… Google knows the answer. Google knows everything.

    Must See Movies and Videos

    movies_3.jpg

    Cozy up with a Cuddle Buddy and a Bowl of Popcorn… These Movies You Must Not Miss!

    These are movies you can watch online that I consider “Must See” for everyone…

    Just click any of the “watch now” links below to begin watching the movie, or click on any of the “download free” links below to download the movie to your computer:

    NOTE: Check the listed running time of each video. If it’s less than one hour, it’s probably only a preview trailer, or not a complete copy.

    ALSO: To download movies and such, if you are on Windows, you’ll need to download and install uTorrent. first. If you’re on Ubuntu or Mac, you’ll need to install Transmission.

    See also: How to Download Everything you Want for Free

    And also see my article called…

    If any of them really strike a cord with you, please be sure to email the link to them (or the link to this page) to everyone you know. That’s the best way to spread the word, by far.

    Also, if you find any of the links above are broken or incorrect, please email me. Thanks!

    Be sure to check out these two awesome pages:

    The Top 100 Page of movies, videos, audiobooks, music, etc. on the entire internet to Download Free, and…

    The Most Popular Movies on the entire internet you can Watch Online Now from Google Video

    Notes:

    Remember, if you download an ISO file you will need to use a free program like IMGBurn to burn a CD or DVD from it. But you will end up with an exact copy — including the full menus, extra bonus features, etc — of the original… not just the movie.

    If you download an AVI file, be sure to check whether it is in English, or in Spanish — whichever you prefer. Also, you might need to get the “Divx” plug-in in order to watch it. You can download it free at Divx.com

    If you download an audiobook it will probably be in MP3 format, for convenient listening on your computer… Or on your iPod.

    If you download a ZIP file, it’s easy to un-zip it once the download is complete. In Windows, just right-click on the ZIP file and click “Extract All…”

    If you have any problems, or questions, following these instructions, please email me to let me know.

    No More Emptying your Laptop Case for Airport Security

    Filed under: Life, Technology — Bruce @ 1:00 pm

    laptop_case_at_security.jpg

    TSA Finally does Something Right

    The TSA just announced that it has put to end their practice of requiring travelers to remove their laptops from their laptop bags.

    This is something I’ve always said is a ridiculous policy. It’s also one of the biggest hassles for anyone going through airport security.

    If the x-ray machine cannot ’see’ through my plastic faux leather laptop bag, then I think there is little hope of it identifying anything… inside of anything at all…

    airport_security.gif

    This, from the ars technica blog…

    When the TSA launched its Evolution of Security blog last month in an effort to engage in open communication with travelers, my colleague Jon Stokes expressed skepticism and characterized as laughable the prospect of TSA acting on feedback from the public. Having written about the ineptitude of TSA in the past myself, I was emphatically inclined to agree with Jon. It looks like we might have passed judgment prematurely, because it only took TSA one week to start making broad policy changes in response to feedback received through the blog.

    In an entry posted at Evolution of Security yesterday, TSA reveals that it has put a permanent end to the highly invasive practice of requiring travelers to remove all electronics from carry-on bags—a security measure that recently inconvenienced many travelers, including several Ars staffers who were flying out of San Francisco International Airport. “After some calls to our airports, we learned that this exercise was set up by local TSA offices and was not part of any grand plan across the country,” the blog entry says. “These practices were stopped on Monday afternoon and Blackberrys, cords and iPods began to flow through checkpoints like the booze was flowing on Bourbon Street Tuesday night. (Fat Tuesday of course).”

    Could this be a real trend… Listening to the public, and to common sense…?

    Don’t hold your breath. I predict otherwise. I say it’s a publicity stunt… to garner positive publicity. God knows, they need all the positive publicity they can get.

    Pretty much everyone human on the planet knows that aiport security in the US is a joke, and always has been. The only thing they do effectively is cause the public great hassle, stress, anxiety, and grief. Oh, yeah… That, and… cause them to miss their flights too.

    Introducing the “Hardy Heron” – Ubuntu 8.04

    Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 9:58 am

    ubuntu_logo_on_ice.jpg

    You don’t even have to install it!

    Ubuntu Linux version 8.04 — also known as, “Hardy Heron” — was first announced on the Ubuntu Developer’s Announcement List this past August. Hardy Heron is scheduled to be officially be released on April 24, 2008.

    However, it’s Alpha 4 version has just been released.

    Obviously, “Alpha” versions of software are NOT recommended for daily desktop use. They are pre-release versions — made available for the public to help in the previewing and testing process… so that all the bugs can be tracked down and fixed prior to its official release in April. Most users should stick with the official current released version, which is 7.10 “Gutsy Gibbon”, for normal use.

    But… If you’re as daring and fearless as I… if you’re a real man, or woman… (just kidding)… YOU too can download it and install it!

    If you want to play with it, preview it, and even help report any bugs you may encounter… You can be part of the process. You can download the “Daily Build“. It’s literally a new version of Ubuntu 8.04 “Hardy Heron” which is updated every single day.

    Of course, you don’t have to download it every day. You can download only one. And, to play with it and test it out… You don’t even have to install it! You can simply burn a CD from the ISO file, and boot from the CD. It’s called a “Live CD” — which means that you can boot your computer from it, and you are running Ubuntu! You don’t even need to install it! (Now, mind you, it is going to run slowly when running from your CD drive, of course… So don’t judge it’s lightening speed from running it on your CD drive!)

    If you’re truly brave. And your data is all truly backed up. Then, like me, you can go ahead and install it… to get the full effect… of it’s lightening speed and all.

    I downloaded it, and I’ll be installing it later today… Stay tuned. I’ll report about it here. :)

    I can’t wait!

    Not only will the Ubuntu community continue to do what it does best, produce an easy-to-use, reliable, free software platform, but this release will be an Long Term Support version with updates available until 5 years after the release date.

    This really is the new Media

    And the bastion of what’s left of Free Speech, and real democracy… As I always say, Thank God for the Internet! Often, it’s the only place you’ll hear the real truth about what’s going on in the world.

    Everyone knows that Google ranks the most important web sites on the entire internet. But did you know that Google also ranks the most important movies, documentaries, and other videos on the internet…?

    This is the page I currently have set, within my browser, as my Start Page (my Home Page): http://video.google.com

    It’s So Cool

    That page shows you THE most popular videos, and full-length movies, and video documentaries… on the entire internet.

    If you click the “Most Viewed” button… Then click on “Browse by Month“, you’ll see what’s hottest on the entire internet now.

    It is very telling of what’s going on in the REAL world — the internet world of free speech. As opposed to the war-time propaganda machine of the 5 guys who control 100% of the Media in the USA — including ALL of the mainstream local and national, newspapers, radio stations, television stations, radio networks, television networks, etc. (see media consolidation)

    You will Notice, that…

    • 5 of the top 5 videos
    • 8 of the top 10 videos ~and~
    • 13 of the top 20 videos

    …on the entire internet

    …are documentaries about many of the topics and issues I talk about most… here on my blog.

    Be sure to watch theses videos especially:

    How Netscape Finally WON the Browser Wars

    Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 9:57 am

    firefox.jpg

    How the good folks at Netscape finally beat Microsoft at their own Game

    Internet Explorer is still alive. Some people still use it.

    However, everyone “in the know” — including every geek you know (just ask them) — only uses the one real browser on the market. It’s called Firefox.

    The most common reason we all use Firefox — besides the fact that it’s free — is that someone along the way pointed out to you that “it’s just so so much faster”. And “it doesn’t crash all the time”. And “it just works a lot better”.

    What most people don’t know is… The Rest of the Story…

    Ten years ago…

    Netscape was the dominant browser. Even though it wasn’t free. It cost about $30 at that time. Netscape had 65 million users. It was huge. In fact, in the educational segment, it had a 90% market share, according to Netscape’s own accounts.

    However, Netscape could clearly foresee what was about to happen.

    Microsoft had developed their own competing browser based on the Mosaic license they had acquired in 1994. They called it Internet Explorer.

    Now, Microsoft had just begun giving away their browser — for free — with the Windows operating system itself — ruthlessly wiping out any chance of competition in the browser marketplace. With the release of Windows 98, Internet Explorer 4.0 was included for free. (Mind you, Netscape had been a $30 product.)

    Obviously, as a free product that was given away with every new computer and every copy of Windows, Internet Explorer was grabbing market share at a furious pace.

    So, the good folks at Netscape saw that the end was, apparently, very near.

    They decided… “If you’re going to destroy our ability to sell this excellent product, then we’ll just donate it to the world.” (my words, as imagined directed at Microsoft)

    They decided to embrace, and become one of the earliest adopters of, the Open Source Movement. They announced to the world that they would publish the source code (computer jargon for, the ’secret recipe’ for the program) for their flagship product — their newest Netscape web browser. This would mean that computer programmers and developers all over the world could study, dissect, and improve on, their browser product… Netscape… for free. (see the original Netscape press release from January 1998)

    Then, just before Netscape was about to be gobbled up by the giant AOL…

    The good folks at Netscape created a joint venture non-profit… with the fulltime staff of Netscape, and the development community. They called it, “Mozilla.org”, after Netscape’s original product code name, Mozilla.

    Since then… Over the past ten years… Due to Microsoft’s forcing Internet Explorer on to every Windows user, Internet Explorer developed into a total monopoly in the browser market. This led to the worst period in web browsers’ history — where innovation was all but non-existent.

    By 2003, the last of the good folks over at Netscape were all finally laid off… by AOL.

    Meanwhile, however, that seed that the good folks at Netscape had planted… in January of 1998… was beginning to sprout.

    firefox.jpg

    The Tortoise and the Hare

    The Netscape browser, which had been released to the public as an open source project, “Mozilla”, had evolved into “Phoenix”, then into “Firebird”, and then in 2004, it became “Firefox 1.0″.

    Over time, just as in the fable of the tortoise and the hare… The open source project always wins out.

    Today, “Firefox 2″, is the defacto standard. With Firefox’s 36.3% market share, it has now surpassed “Internet Explorer 7″ with its only 21.0% market share, as of December 2007. source

    So you see… the good folks at Netscape lost the battle… and they lost their jobs… But they appear to have won the war… in the end.

    By the way, you’ll find an exactly parallel story unfolding in the history of Windows versus Ubuntu Linux. Now you can already predict who is going to win the war for your desktop operating system — the “Desktop Wars”. Now you know who to ‘put your money on’ in that race as well. You heard it here first.

    In fact, you’ll see the same story repeating itself again with Sun Microsystems creating, and then spinning off as an open source suite of applications, OpenOffice Suite — the FREE version of Microsoft Office compatible software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and even Adobe Illustrator and Visio. They even have free versions for Windows and Mac, as well as Ubuntu. (see OpenOffice.org)

    Just as in the fable of the tortoise and the hare… Over time, the open source project always wins out.

    Maybe You Really DO Like Windows Vista

    Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 11:20 pm

    vistalogo.jpg

    ubuntu-1280x1024_cropped_tight.png

    About 9 months ago, my spouse and I bought two identical PCs. They both came with Vista pre-installed.

    The day we purchased them, I wiped one completely and installed Ubuntu on it.

    The two of us have been using them side-by-side all day, every day. Identical hardware, down to the idential cables.

    We can both say, with absolute certainty, by now, that we absolutely HATE Windows Vista.

    It is some of the worst software ever published for wide release by ANY software company in history.

    Ubuntu, on the other hand, has been a dream come true.

    With normal all day use, Vista has to be hard-powered-off cold-booted (in other words, power off crashed) every morning… Then, it has to be re-started several times throughout the day, in order to keep it operating at all.

    Ubuntu, on the other hand has been running flawlessly non-stop ever since I installed it. It has never crashed, and I have only re-started it twice — once just to see how lightening fast it re-starts, and once just because I had like 150 windows open and I wanted to close them all real fast. : )

    Everything in Ubuntu — including Windows applications — seems to run 1000 times faster than in Windows, and 2000 times faster than in Vista.

    I’ve been dreaming of the “perfect computer” since the 80’s.

    It has arrived. Ubuntu ROCKS!

    Not to even mention things like:

    (1) All software is free, and equal or superior to Windows versions. I now use loads of new software that I could not even afford to buy for Windows. For Ubuntu, ALL software is free! Software like: Office Professional, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, Photoshop, Quicken, Quickbooks, Project, Acrobat, Illustrator, CD/DVD burning, video editing, backup, …you name it! Everything except anti-virus software — no such thing…

    (2) There is no anti-virus, or anti-spyware, software because there are no viruses or spyware in Ubuntu. There has never been a virus for Ubuntu because — unlike Windows — Ubuntu is a SECURE operating system. (Microsoft makes TONS of money selling anti-virus and anti-spyware software — yet every installation of Windows seems to be full of viruses and spyware — even though they claim to have “Critical Security Updates” almost daily. You can draw your own conclusions about that.)

    (3) Far superior support — also for free. Because Ubuntu users are so crazy about it, they’re almost evangelists for it. They want very much for you to love it too. This spirit is reflected in the way they help each other so readily in the Ubuntu forums for “absolute beginners”. ( ubuntuforums.org )

    (4) Did you read in the news that Walmart has teamed up with Ubuntu and Google to sell an Ubuntu laptop for $399… and an Ubuntu tower for $199. Also, Sears is doing the same thing… They will sell an Ubuntu tower for $199 (from a different hardware manufacturer). Dell Computer already sells lots of machines with Ubuntu pre-installed instead of Windows — and every application you could dream of — for free too, of course (see dell.com/open ). There are now dozens of computer manufacturers offering Ubuntu, and all applications, pre-installed instead of Windows or Vista.

    You can even try Ubuntu by booting it from the install CD and running it from the CD — temporarily — just to see how it looks and feels.

    But I recommend that you back up all your data, make your “recovery CDs”, and just go for it. Install Ubuntu and tell it to “use the entire disk”. It will format your hard drive, but you’ll never look back.

    It is so so so awesome!

    And, I’m so crazy about it, if you run into any problems, email or call me. I’ll be happy to help you.

    Get Ubuntu, and all the software you’ll ever need for the rest of your life, for free, at: ubuntu.com There you can download an ISO file which you can burn to a CD… Or, if you don’t know how to do that, you can even request that they simply mail you the install CD in the regular postal mail — all for free.

    Who is “Open Source”? And if it’s All Free, How do They Make Their Money?

    Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 12:00 pm

    open-source-bart-simpson.gif

    Microsoft, Apple, IBM, etc… are like famous bakeries. With Top Secret recipes. They give out free samples, but they sell their baked goods for handsome profits. No one knows the secret recipes — much like the highly guarded Kentucky Fried Chicken secret recipe, and the Coca-Cola secret formulas.

    The Open Source Movement, on the other hand, is like a consortium of all-volunteer expert bakers who — not only give all of their baked goods for free, but they also — publish every recipe and make them all available for free to everyone — so every baker in the world can make the baked goods at home, improve on the recipes, and return the improvements to the big master cookbook, to continue sharing all the new improvements with the world.

    Of course, as the Open Source community likes to emphasize… Open Source software is not only “free as in free beer”… It is much more than that. It is “free as in free speech”. By using it, you are supporting a new worldwide movement away from a corporate profit-driven model of technology — which has always created closed, proprietary, top secret systems, protocols, hardware, and software… that are expensive, don’t work with each other, and are extremely slow to evolve and improve. (Want an example? Just try synching your iPhone with your Palm Desktop calendar and contacts database… Or try running Apple Software on an IBM computer.)

    Open Source systems, on the other hard, are all about being totally open, cooperative, collaborative, inter-connected, ‘on the same page’, and super-fast to evolve and improve. Not to mention, much much more stable, reliable, and efficient.

    That’s one reason why the vast majority of web site servers are run on Open Source operating systems like Ubuntu Linux — because a web server must have 0% ‘down time’.

    That’s also one reason that the smartest companies in the world — like Google — have always used 100% Linux (Ubuntu is the most popular ‘flavor’ of Linux, by the way.), and 0% Microsoft Windows. They know how to get the best performance and value out of computers — both servers and desktops. And it’s not from Microsoft.

    Did you take that in…? 100% of the servers that run Google’s search engines — which are getting 1.2 Billion searches per day, worldwide — are run on Linux (Ubuntu or some other flavor of Linux). And 0% are run on Microsoft Windows.

    I know…

    You still like the “free as in free beer” part… That’s a very cool side-effect too! :)

    Windows vs. Ubuntu’s Best Applications

    For Ubuntu, ALL software is free!

    On Ubuntu, all software is free. It’s also equal to, or superior to, the Windows versions. I now use loads of new software that I could not even justify the expense of buying for Windows — just to play with it, or try it out… And I mean, ALL software… like: Office Professional, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, Photoshop, Quicken, Quickbooks, Microsoft Project, Adobe Illustrator, FrontPage, DreamWeaver, Nero, Avid Liquid, Final Cut Pro, video editing, backup, …you name it! The majority of these applications already come pre-installed in the latest version of Ubuntu by default (version 8.04, Hardy Heron). All others must be installed, for free, with one click under the menu: “Applications–>Add/Remove–>All Open Source” from within Ubuntu.

    add-remove-applications.jpg

    Many of these Ubuntu applications are also available in versions for Windows and Mac. There are many advantages to using these programs — even on Windows or Mac. Besides the obvious fact that they are all free, they are all “best of breed” equal to or better than the commercial options. The other greatest direct benefit to you is… Once you finally decide to take the leap and switch from Windows or Mac, to Ubuntu Linux, you will already have been using all the best Ubuntu applications. You’ll already be quite familiar with them and the transition will be a breeze for you! Additionally, by using these programs you are actually supporting the entire Open Source movement. By using these programs, and telling all of your friends about them, you are increasing the user base — and the developer base for these best applications. This means that they will continue to grow and improve even more quickly. In the table above, a link for win appears if there is also a Windows version, and mac appears if there is a Mac version available.

    For support, for any of these applications, you will

    get instant answers to your questions at the Ubuntu Forums.

    In cases where there are two or more applications that are so close in the running that it was difficult to decide which one is the “best of breed” — I have included a link to the ‘first runner up’ application as alt, for alternate. In a few cases, there might even be two alternates, and you will see two alt links.

    NOTE: What are your favorite Windows applications? Did I miss something on this list? Do you disagree with my choice of which Ubuntu application is the “best of breed” for a certain category? Please email me and let me know so I can continue to update this list and make it more complete. We’ll keep this article as a living document — continuing to evolve and improve.

    “Superior to Windows or Mac” – New York Times

    Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 5:49 am

    ubuntu_in_black.png

    Check this out: The Next Leap for Linux from the New York Times

    For the most part, the article is good.

    The author, Larry Magid, rightly points out that all of Google’s servers run on Linux. Ubuntu is the most popular flavor of Linux by far.

    Mr. Magid fails to point out that the vast majority of ALL internet servers are run on Linux — not on any version of Windows. This is because companies responsible for internet servers know that Linux is the best choice for reliability. Not to mention that the price is always right — free.

    I have two major issues with his article though…

    (1) He recommends Automatix. However, every Ubuntu insider knows that Automatix is a poor-quality package which is neither supported, nor recommended, by Ubuntu. See Automatix is not supported nor recommended by Ubuntu and Automatix is a poor quality package which fails to conform to Debian or Ubuntu policy.

    (2) His concluding remark is just plain wrong.

    “But since common tasks like watching a movie or syncing an iPod require hunting for and installing extra software, Linux is best for technically savvy users or for people whose needs are so basic that they will never need anything other than the bundled software.”

    That statement is just so wrong — on so many levels.

    He says that Ubuntu is only good for super technically savvy users… Or… for total novices with only basic needs… What!? Does that even make sense to you? Seems contradictory to me.

    The last time I checked, Windows does not come with iTunes pre-installed either. Every new Windows user must “hunt for and install extra software” in order to sync with their iPod.

    In fact, every new Windows user must go to the store and spend upwards of $679 to get Microsoft Office — an office suite of applications — like word processing, spreadsheet, presentation creator, and database. And that’s just the beginning. Every new application costs another $89.99… or more. Sometimes, much more.

    On Ubuntu Linux, ALL software is free. Period. There is this list, called “Add/Remove…”, which is like a giant computer software super-store on your screen — where everything is free. Every program is listed there and shows the detailed description of what it is, along with a Star Rating (1 to 5 stars) given to it by the user community. And then, all software is installed, or unistalled, by the click of a checkbox next to the name of the program. Obtaining and installing new software is as simple as turning on a light switch. And then, it’s automatically updated with the latest updates from then on. You can easily see, from this List of Windows Software and it’s Ubuntu Linux Alternative Software, that for every one Windows program, there are between 4 and 8 Ubuntu Linux programs to choose from — and all are free — as in $0.00. There are many more lists of Windows software and their Ubuntu equivalents.

    Syncing an iPod has nothing to do with Ubuntu, it has to do with Apple. Apple writes terribly sloppy software. The iTunes program crashes and flakes out all the time running on Windows. iTunes also uses proprietary DRM (Digital Rights Management) code designed to prevent you from playing your music if you don’t have what Apple considers the appropriate rights to it. It’s for this reason that iTunes does not run on Linux. However, there are several programs included with Ubuntu which DO synch your music to your iPod, and they seem to work a lot BETTER than iTunes does anyway.

    As for watching commercial DVDs… It’s strictly a legal issue. There’s this little thing called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which is an extension to United States copyright law passed unanimously on May 14, 1998, which criminalizes the production and dissemination of technology that allows users to circumvent technical copy-restriction methods. In other words, it’s not legal for Ubuntu to include the program which decrypts commercial DVDs. You have to install that yourself. By clicking on one single checkmark, then clicking Apply. It’s really not that tough. (Then, if you go to jail… for watching a commercial DVD that you purchased or rented, on your own machine… it’s all on you. Although no one has ever gone to jail for such a thing, as far as I know. At least not yet.)

    Actually, the simplest way to add all these proprietary programs you need — and the first thing you should do on any new Ubuntu install — is to go run this little utility program which does it all for you. It’s called QuickStart. A very smart user created it for his own use — and has shared it with the world — in the true spirit of Ubuntu. Click here for the simple instructions to download and run this automatic utility: How to Install the QuickStart Utility. Then, simply launch QuickStart and select from the Main Menu to: “Install DVD and Codecs Files”, Install Flash Plugin”, and “Install Java 6″. That’s it! Done.

    So… The issues that Mr. Magid has with Ubuntu, are not Ubuntu issues at all. They are issues with Apple’s DRM and with the DMCA — both revolving around ridiculous copy-protection schemes created in order to prevent legitimate consumers from getting the full, fair, use out of the entertainment products they legitimately purchase.

    Mr. Magid, as a technology writer for the prestigious New York Times, you should know better — or at least do your research — or have someone do it for you.

    Skype is out, Ekiga is in — and Truly Free

    Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 2:19 am

    As many of you know, I have been somewhat of a Skype evangelist ever since the first time I tried it. Skype is the software that makes your computer into a video telephone for free worldwide calling.

    In the past year, however, I’ve had more and more concerns over Skype’s secretive excessive use of your internet bandwidth — even when you’re not making calls. Also, I’ve been reading some very disconcerting news about Skype’s secretive and proprietary protocols, and how they may already be abusing them.

    There are also reports about Skype engaging in censorship and government espionage in China — assisting the government of China in monitoring and censoring their own citizens.

    Also, because Skype does not adhere to open standards, you’re really locked in to one company… with no possibility of fair and open competition. They could begin charging for the service any time they want to, and you and all of your contacts are really locked in to a certain degree.

    See:

    Meet Ekiga — my new favorite internet telephone and videoconferencing software

    Now, I have a new hero: Ekiga.org

    Ekiga is completely Open Source / Free – which means that it is, and always will be, free for all to use… and it will continually be improved by developers who donate their time and effort to make it better.

    Even the regular telephone number is free!

    Here’s what you do:

    (1) If you are using a Windows computer, go to Ekiga.ORG to download the Windows version of the Ekiga software for free. If you are already using Ubuntu (which I recommend, by the way), then you already have Ekiga — it’s built-in. Simply go to “Applications–>Internet–>Ekiga Softphone” to launch it.

    (2) Go to Ekiga.NET to register a new account. This will give you what is called a “SIP number”. It is like a “user ID” for the open internet telephone network. For example, mine is: sip:brucewagner@ekiga.net and Ed’s is sip:edgel@ekiga.net

    (3) To get your own absolutely free normal telephone number assigned to your Ekiga softphone, go to IPKall.com. On this sign-up page, you’ll: (a) select an area code for your phone number, (b) where it says SIP phone number, enter the first part of your SIP number — as in my case it would be “brucewagner”, (c) for the SIP proxy, enter the last part — as in my case it would be “ekiga.net”, then enter your email address and a password and click SUBMIT. You’ll receive your new phone number in your email within moments. It should be working right away. When anyone calls it, it will ring on your computer. Mine is 206-456-0597, and Ed’s is 206-456-0585. Call us now and try it out!

    Telephone service can’t get any more free than that!

    Ubuntu Rocks!

    Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 3:02 pm

    I’m overdosing a bit on technology. I just finished migrating the last of our computers entirely AWAY from evil Windows, and away from all things Microsoft, in fact… And TOWARD the future of computers….. Ubuntu.

    And believe it or not, the fussiest user God ever created ( Ed ), absolutely LOVES Ubuntu….! : ) What a relief! It only took me about 8 months to convince him that he’d really be happier with Ubuntu than ANY version of Windows or Mac…. Not to mention that all the software is 100% legally free…. There are no viruses and no spyware. It never crashes. And….In case he’d ever want to (why!?), it runs all Windows software too!!! Even faster and better than real Windows!!! (using the free “Wine” windows emulation option.)

    And I proved it. He’s running his beloved uTorrent (so far only available in a windows version) on his Ubuntu…. under Wine.

    He was happy that Quicken for Windows also runs on Ubuntu… But…. He decided that the free Ubuntu equivalent of Quicken/Quickbooks is much better and more feature-rich… so he imported all of his Quicken data in one step and is going to switch to using it. It’s call GnuCash.

    ALL the software for Ubuntu is FREE, and installed or uninstalled with the click of a checkbox…. and as good, if not better, than the Windows versions you buy in the store for anywhere from $59 to $99 to $200 to $600…. OpenOffice is FAR better than Microsoft Office – even though it’s completely cpmpatable, and free. It includes…. a Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Access. We also have FREE better equivalents for FrontPage, Dreamweaver, Project, Visio, and on and on…. You name it!

    If you have any questions, or need help, post a comment here… or email me.

    Send Voicemail — without bothering the person by ringing his phone

    Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 12:28 pm

    There are features within certain cellphone companies’ voicemail systems, where you can Send a Voicemail to another subscriber…
    …which is an Excellent, very useful feature.

    The Drawback: This only works if the other person…

    (1) Also has Verizon (or AT&T, or whatever — the same provider as you!),

    AND

    (2) he also has service in the SAME LOCAL METRO AREA… (on the same physical voicemail computer)

    ~

    I wish there was a universal standard system for leaving a voicemail for someone WITHOUT RINGING THEIR PHONE…

    :(

    …like maybe dialing *22, as a prefix to their number or something.

    Even better…

    Ideally, every telephone should have — on the Dial Pad screen itself — after you dial the number, you then see TWO buttons:

    • one labelled “Call“, and
    • the other one labelled, “Send Voicemail” (without calling)

    Skype has this feature.

    This way I could actually return calls…. at 4:00am… without bothering anyone! Imagine!

    Come on, Telephone Network Engineers, think of something….. ok?

    Ideas? Do share…. in the comments here.

    UPDATE (April 1, 2008):   See…

    As soon as you hear Ringing Start, press 1 to go directly to Voicemail without actually Ringing his Phone!

    The Wall Street Journal gets it Wrong

    Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 1:19 pm

    Today in the Wall Street Journal’s Personal Technology section, appears an article by Walter Mossberg, which claims to be a “review” of “Linux”.

    If you read the article, however, it is not really reviewing Linux.

    It’s not even reviewing, specifically, Ubuntu Linux (which is the most popular Linux build, by far)…

    But it is actually reviewing a specific Dell Computer pre-installed build of Ubuntu… which came pre-installed on his Dell laptop, Inspiron 1420N model.

    Here follows my response to Mr. Mossberg’s article…

    ~

    Dear Walter,

    I read your article about Ubuntu today.

    WOW!

    I have had the exact OPPOSITE experience….

    Every problem you mentioned sounds to me to be DELL-SPECIFIC issues…

    The touchpad is a Dell-specific driver issue. This is totally Dell’s responsibility to provide that driver, software, etc…. not Ubuntu.

    The hibernate–volume control issue is a Dell-specific issue.

    Codec’s do come built-in, in all standard versions of Ubuntu. This must be something odd about the build used on Dell’s machine. Once again, Dell’s responsibility.

    I’ve never had any trouble getting Ubuntu to recognize any hardware I have ever plugged in to it.

    OBVIOUSLY, an iPod will not synch to a Linux machine because Apple has proprietary software for that purpose — called iTunes — and Apple, as of now, has NOT released a version for Linux. This is has nothing to do with Linux, but Apple’s lack of support for Linux. That is totally Apple’s responsibility… And only Apple can ultimately solve this issue.

    Meanwhile, you CAN sych an iPod to an Ubuntu machine… because you can use iTunes for Windows — as well as any other Windows-specific software on Ubuntu — if you use the Wine Windows emulator. In fact, people report that Windows applications run BETTER on Ubuntu with Wine… than they do even on native Windows!

    I play all videos, including commercial DVD videos, on my Ubuntu Linux machine — straight “out of the box” — directly as installed — without adding anything. I have never added ONE PIECE of additional software.

    Mine is is an HP a1744x AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+ 2.40GHz tower.

    It came with Vista installed, and I immediately went to ubuntu.com and downloaded Ubuntu and installed it within about 10 minutes — completely wiping out any trace of Windows Vista.

    It was a breeze to install, and I have had no problems you describe whatsoever.

    Your article seems to be reviewing DELL….. Not Ubuntu…

    And, if this is your first time using Ubuntu, and you are basing every comment about Ubuntu….. on Dell’s installation of it… I think this is irresponsible journalism.

    Better Journalism

    Take an old PC you have at home. Go to http://ubuntu.com and install it on that old PC.

    Then…. write an article about how that experience goes…

    Ubuntu Linux runs faster, better, and more reliably, than any version of Windows ever has. Even on an old out-dated PC, Ubuntu runs FASTER and more reliably than brand new machines running the latest versions of Windows.

    Ubuntu doesn’t crash or need twice daily re-booting like Windows does.

    You really need to review Ubuntu Linux, if you’re article is going to claim to do so… not Dell. Ubuntu is not responsible for Dell’s flaws.

    As for Support

    Just TRY getting free support for Windows, for a total novice user… Where do you get that? Have you tried calling Microsoft lately…?

    … from Microsoft’s call centers in Bangalore, India?

    I’ve actually had them — for real — say, “Windows? Can you please spell that word, Windows?” NO JOKE! I almost fell off my chair! Didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry… (see also this article)

    Canonical offers support for total Ubuntu novices… and is FAR SUPERIOR to the support Microsoft provides.

    Obviously, there is a lot more MONEY in the corporate world… so there is marketing emphasis on corporate clients… of course! Microsoft does the same thing — targeting the big corporate clients. At least, as we all know by now, THOSE are the phone calls that get returned… when Exxon’s corporate IT (computer) department calls…

    Yours,

    Bruce Wagner
    New York City

    ~

    The Bottom Line

    It has been my experience that, the installation and use of Ubuntu is FAR EASIER for a novice than Windows Vista.

    All the software one needs to do 100% of the tasks that 99% of the public uses computers for, is all installed AUTOMATICALLY… and totally FREE… virus-free… spyware-free…

    You can’t even get virus software for Ubuntu. Because there are no viruses. Windows is buggy and wide open to viruses.

    Meanwhile, Microsoft is HUGE in the anti-virus business! Their product called, Microsoft Windows Live OneCare claims to be Number One of the Top Five Security Products on Microsoft’s own web site

    Am I saying that Microsoft INTENTIONALLY leaves Windows open to viruses and spyware… only so they can sell their own Anti-Virus Software…? No, I’ll leave that to you… to draw your own conclusion…

    But… If that’s not the case, then why is the Open Source Community able to build a superior operating system, which is totally secure, free of viruses and spyware, and used by more web servers in the world than Windows… And give it away for FREE…?

    Either way you look at it… Microsoft is either criminally devious… or unbelievably inept.

    I’d love to see the day when Windows can do half of what Ubuntu can do — with half the resources — especially for the Novice user.

    ~

    * Note that, I blogged about previously, the only issue I’ve had with Ubuntu. It was simply due to an odd combination of factors. I installed and am running Ubuntu on an AMD 64-bit architecture machine ~AND~ there are a couple of third-part PROPRIETARY software pieces that had published their PROPRIETARY software for Ubuntu Linux running on normal Intel (x386) machines… but NOT yet for Ubuntu Linux running on AMD 64-bit machines. This lack of support is solely the responsibility of the software companies (Adobe and Sun Microsystems), because their software is PROPRIETARY (i.e. a private, secret recipe, which they refused to disclose).

    As a result, I posted here about the two components that I could not find a version to install: Adobe’s FlashPlayer, and Sun Microsystems Java.

    Subsequently, I found the answer accidentally when on Google trying to find a version of Gmail Notifier to install. Google pointed me to this page. I have yet to install them, because I want to make absolutely certain that Adobe and Sun have still continued to drop the ball on AMD 64-bit installs of Ubuntu, before I follow these instructions to use the 16-bit versions of the programs.

    Since that time, however, there has been a lot of talk about these companies finally Open Sourcing their scripting engines (the best news), or at the very least expanding their support of Linux on more processor platforms.

    Do you know the ultimate latest best answer? Please say it in plain English in the Comments here. Thanks.

    Did I get anything wrong? If so, sound off here in the Comments.

    Learning a Language and Attending Harvard, all for Free, while Commuting to work on a Bicycle

    Filed under: Consumer Issues, Health, Life, Love, Money, Technology — Bruce @ 12:47 pm

    This is Unifying the Planet

    …fast!

    That’s right.

    All any human being needs is… an iPod (or a cheap iPod knock-off from China, or any other cheap MP3 player, or a computer) and an occasional internet connection.

    A 16-year-old boy could be riding a bicycle in Bangladesh… and…

    a middle-aged construction laborer could be sitting in the back of a Baht bus in Bangkok… at the same time, while…

    …taking a course at Harvard,

    …learning Spanish or Czech or German or French, or

    …watching the world’s best video and audio tutorials, movies, and documentaries

    All for free.

    Don’t shoot me…

    I’m just tellin it like it is…

    This technology IS ALREADY changing the education of the masses on this planet.

    I said above, that any person could be doing these things…

    However, the truth is… THEY ALREADY ARE!

    Right now — at this very moment — a 15-year-old schoolgirl in Kolkata, India

    and a grandmother in Yangon, Myanmar

    are getting an education by listening to, and watching, downloaded media… for free.

    Do YOU even know how to use uTorrent? (See brucewagner.com/free )

    You install the free program, then you go to a site like mininova.org or thepiratebay.org

    All for free, from all over the globe — not hundreds of millions — but BILLIONS — of human beings, are downloading anything they want — educational CDs, DVDs, movies, books — you name it…

    Then, they are watching and/or listening to ALL of the best video and audio material ever created…. for free…. while they are walking, waiting, working, relaxing, commuting, etc… on their iPod, or MP3 player, or cellphone or PDA… or now, even on their iPhone…

    Agree with it or not…. The world IS changing at lightning speed, as a result.

    To give you an idea of what’s out there….

    Here are some of the Pimsleur Language Courses available for free, which you can download via bittorrent…

    See http://www.mininova.org/search/pimsleur/seeds

    Here are some of the The Teaching Company (TTC) University Courses available for free, which you can download via bittorrent…

    and en Espanol,

    Make no mistake about it…

    In some countries it is illegal to download copyrighted material.

    We certainly recommend that you abide by the law always.

    And…

    These programs are usually copyright protected, and may cost anywhere from $200 for one language course, to thousands of dollars for one single university course…

    But…

    The Masses — literally billions of people — are downloading them for free… from all over the planet… 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

    BitTorrent + iPod = Universal Global Education

    Whether you choose to join them or not… You should be aware of how this IS changing the world you live in.

    No more calling, hoping for no answer…

    Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 3:22 pm

    I’ve found (correction: actually, Ed used StumbleUpon — which is really cool — and found)…

    a new service, called… Jott.com, which allows you to call a toll-free number, speak your message into the phone, and have it automatically delivered via email… and/or SMS text message… and/or audio voice message. all for free… of course… (Are we getting spoiled with all of these cool internet-based services being free?)

    The person you want to send a message to must be entered in advance into your Jott Contacts online at Jott.com…. But they have an automatic import tool which will import all of your contacts from your AOL, Outlook, Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, Plaxo, or other email address book… if you like… or you can enter them manually.

    You can also Jott “Notes to Self” and send one Jott to an entire pre-defined Group of your contacts… like your “Sales Team” group… Or your “church friends” group, or whatever… The system transcribes your voice message into text when sending to the person’s email address or as an SMS text message… which takes 2 or 3 minutes… Or, you can opt to send an “Instant Jott” with no transcription… as a recorded voice message only.

    So far, Ed and I give it “two thumbs up”. It works very well. No more calling a person and hoping they don’t answer… :)

    Microsoft’s Death Wish

    Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 7:54 pm

    ubuntu — a name to remember

    I am a brand new ubuntu user…

    ubuntu is the latest state-of-the-art user-friendly version of Linux…

    Linux is the computer operating system that, many experts say, is far superior to any version of Windows …especially the newest versions, including Vista.

    Oh, and did I mention that Linux is free. And the ubuntu version comes with OpenOffice — which is totally compatible with Microsoft Office — with one major difference… It’s also free.

    Many articles are coming out in the press and by bloggers saying that Vista, Microsoft’s latest version of Windows, contains over 40 separate programs which collect personal data about YOU, and send it to Microsoft… and to any other external companies Microsoft deems to be an external “service provider” company… whatever they decide that that term means… And YOU “signed the contract” agreeing to all that… when you clicked on the “I AGREE” button when you set up your Windows… the first time you ran your computer and Windows was automatically installed…

    Well, Linux doesn’t have any of that. It just runs. It almost never crashes. You never need to re-start it. Professionals who run large websites have considered Linux superior for many years, which is why the web servers run Linux… instead of Windows.

    We just bought TWO new HP a1744x AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core procesor 4600+ 1.40GHz computers…

    I just downloaded ubuntu…. and installed it on one of them… (mine)… And left Microsoft Windows Vista on the other one (Ed’s)… so that we can use both operating systems… side-by-side… and compare them on a daily basis.

    Installing ubuntu was easy — except for the fact that the BACK and CONTINUE buttons were not visible… and the window was not re-sizable… so I had to Auto-Hide the top bar and the bottom bar… and then I could BARELY see the top edge of the CONTINUE button… I had to GUESS that it said CONTINUE…

    But I was very lucky…. the top edge of the buttons became visible, and the right-most button seemed to have been CONTINUE or NEXT or something…

    Now, it’s installed.

    It works well. I am impressed. OpenOffice is very slick too. So far, plenty as good as my old MS Office 2000, if not better.

    I was amazed that the printer drivers installed perfectly. And even more amazed that I was able to immediately connect to my shared drive on my other Windows XP machine, and other Windows Vista machine.

    Now, the three stumbling blocks I’ve encountered, and am stuck on, are:

    (1) Adobe Flash Player and Shockwave Player — These are really mission critical. Many web sites, and nearly ALL internet video depends on it. It’s not available for Linux on an AMD64 platform???? Tell me this is not so. Adobe COULD NOT be so negligent. There is no way.

    (2) Java — I understand it’s available. I’ve seen the download page (here), but I’m given FOUR choices:

    Linux RPM (self-extracting file)
    Linux (self-extracting file)
    Linux x64
    Linux x64 RPM

    I don’t know what an RPM file is… and I don’t know how to install these….

    (3) I think I installed Wine…. (the Linux software that is supposed to allow me to run Windows programs)… But I don’t think it works. And I don’t even know how to know if it is working or not. I don’t know how to install, or open, a Windows program…. and run it under Wine.

    (4) Skype — What’s the deal with running Skype on ubuntu on AMD64…? Skype’s own FAQ just sends you to a forum thread…. Please tell me the bottom line about this….

    I know that this type of information changes monthly… if not daily…. So could someone please give me TODAY’s bottom line answer about each of these issues…?

    In the meantime, I guess you’ll be seeing me lurking around the official ubuntu support forums, the Adobe support forums, the official and unofficial Java forums, the Wine support forums, and the Skype support forums, ..until I get to the bottom of these issues, and have them resolved.

    Stay tuned right here for updates… I will post them here.

    At this rate your computer could be…

    100% Microsoft-Free by 2008

    The next question is… What to do about the other two near-monopoly internet conglomerate super-powers possibly bent on you having zero privacy — knowing everything about you — and using it… and possibly selling the information about you…

    What to do about Google and eBay.

    These days it seems like everything on the internet is owned, partly or in full, by either Google, eBay, or Microsoft.

    And, by the way, eBay is NOT just the auction site that comes to mind… eBay is an entire internet conglomerate — just like Google and Microsoft.

    eBay bought Skype.

    Google just bought GrandCentral… so now I have to find a new phone services provider.

    eBay even bought part of craigslist behind Craigs’ back, and against his will!

    Google owns Gmail, of course… and all three seem to buy any new venture that comes along that shows real promise. It’s a sad state of affairs.

    Google has monopoly-like domination of the world of online advertising with its Google Adwords.

    Every venture they own collects information about you… and all of their ventures share information amongst themselves. That’s why it’s important that you have a GOOGLE ACCOUNT… and an YAHOO ACCOUNT… and an MSN (Microsoft) ACCOUNT… etc, etc… The cookies reveal your IP address to connect the dots… between all of your business… your identity… your transactions… everything you’ve ever bought online… every web site you ‘ve ever visited… every word or phrase you have ever used Google to search for… etc., etc., etc…

    So… Ubuntu Linux with OpenOffice… is better than Windows Vista (about $200) and Microsoft Office (about $600) …and it’s TOTALLY FREE! And ALWAYS WILL BE FREE. That’s basically what the term “Open Source” means.

    Since OpenOffice uses all of the same standard file formats as Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, etc… They can still all share the same documents as the rest of the world… But the NEVER use… (or have to buy…) Windows or Vista or Microsoft-Office.

    If you’re curious about trying Ubuntu Linux, and OpenOffice as a better, and cheaper, alternative to Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office… You’re not alone.

    Check out Who Else is Already Using it!

    I think you’ll be amazed and impressed… that so many major world governments, major corporations, and universities, have standardized on NOT using Windows and Microsoft Office any more… only Linux and OpenOffice.

    Take a quick look at this wiki page which lists the Major Linux and OpenOffice Deployments throughout the World — including Governments, Schools and Universities, Private Sector and Major Corporations — all using Linux and OpenOffice as their standard platform — NOT Windows and Microsoft Office.

    No more spending $600 per computer for Microsoft Office! OpenOffice is just simply free!

    No more spending about $50 extra per computer — on every new computer you buy — because you’re forced to pay for Windows — which comes already on it….

    That’s the power of Open Source Software

    If you want to stick your toe into the water, for a taste without committing to it…

    Here are two great ways:

    (1) Try downloading and installing the FREE version of Office — called OpenOffice — but the version that runs on Windows XP or Vista. You will see what it’s like, and it’s very likely you’ll like it better than Microsoft Office (which costs about $600)… I do! And it opens and saves everything in Microsoft Office file formats anyway!)

    (2) If you have an older computer sitting around not doing much… like most of us do… This is your perfect opportunity to install and play around with Ubuntu Linux. Simply download it free. You will get an ISO file, which you can use to burn a CD. Then, boot that old computer (or any computer) with that CD. The installation is a breeze! If you run into any problems or issues in the process, please post a reply to this blog item. I really want to hear about your experiences, and help you solve any issues you may run into!

    The next question is…

    What to do about the other two near-monopoly internet conglomerate super-powers possibly bent on you having zero privacy — knowing everything about you — and using it… and possibly selling the information about you…?

    See my recent article, 100% Microsoft-Free by 2008… And…

    You might want to consider joining the Electronic Freedom Foundation today.

    Auto-Silence feature on Theater-going Cellphones

    Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 7:35 pm

    Why don’t the manufacturers add a feature to cellphones for SILENCING them automatically when inside certain facilities.

    For example, you could have a feature on your cellphone called Auto-Silence….

    Then, when you are in class, in church, in the conference room, in the library, in a hospital, in a museum, in certain restaurants, etc, etc… that prefer silence… your phone could switch itself to Silent Vibrate mode…. Then, when you leave that room, or that building, your phone could auto-switch back to its original mode (audible ring or whatever)…

    These institutions could have a little box that would broadcast a certain industry-standard signal… to tell cell phones to auto-silence themselves. Then, once they are out of range of that box for a minute or so, the phones would automatically revert to their normal ring settings.

    If this could be implemented for only certain ROOMS within a building, that would be ideal…. For example, only in the auditoriums of the movie theater… Or only within the classrooms at school…

    Something similar to actually automatically power off the phones on cue when on an airline flight could also be convenient. But, hopefully, these would all be OPTIONAL features that the individual user could choose to enable, or not… Though, perhaps they should come set to ON (ENABLED) by factory default… for the peace and quiet of the public… at church, in class, at the theater, etc., etc…

    I’m just putting that idea out there…. Hoping someone takes it and runs with it…

    BitTorrent / uTorrent Support Forums

    Filed under: Internet Freedom, Technology — Bruce @ 3:51 pm

    bittorrent_visualized.jpg

    On the official uTorrent site, there are attached forums… for which the premise is supposed to be… support of the uTorrent user community.

    However, as it turns out, the good folks over at BitTorrent, Inc. (bittorrent.com), who recently BOUGHT uTorrent (utorrent.com)… apparently are not paying attention…

    Because the official uTorrent Support Forums are being run by a few kids who are on some sort of a power trip – real “legends in their own minds”. They “lock” and “trash” every topic posted by new users for a multitude of stupid reasons — reasons such as:

    (1) if that question has EVER been asked before
    (2) if that question has EVER been answered before
    (3) if that question is just not “smart” enough
    (4) if the person asking the question is “obviously new to bittorrent”

    etc., etc., etc…

    They make it very clear that they are NOT there to assist new users in any way… But that they are they only there to assist themselves… in their own little fiefdom… and to learn – themselves – by being exposed to real experts.

    New users are NOT permitted to ask questions there… And, further…

    OTHER users are not even permitted to Answer the questions of new users…

    In fact, I myself, was BANNED from that forum simply for helping a new user… by answering his questions… Can you believe that!?

    I don’t know how large of a company BitTorrent, Inc. is… But it amazes me that a company like that is letting a couple of mean-spirited young kids on a power trip ruin their entire official “User Support Forums”, and ruin the user experience of their own product…

    SO…. until BitTorrent, Inc. wakes up to what’s going on over there… on there own web site…

    I’ll be providing uTorrent Support Forums… right here…

    Where…

    A great editorial from Sunbelt Software…

    Should Technology Makers Be Responsible for How You Use Their Products?

    It’s becoming increasingly popular to extend legal responsibility for illegal behavior way beyond the person who actually commits the crime. Bartenders are sued or even charged criminally if a person who buys alcohol from them drives drunk. Gun owners are blamed if criminals steal their weapons and commit murder or robbery. Parents are fined if their teenage children skip school, even if the parent has delivered the child to the schoolhouse door. Vehicle owners get tickets if their cars run red lights – even if they weren’t driving.

    Filed under: Internet Freedom, Technology — Bruce @ 1:33 pm

    free.gif

    I’ve created a new guide to the coolest new (FREE) technology, called BitTorrent.

    It allows you to download (FOR FREE) tons and tons of media….

    Everything is available — ALL movies, music, tv shows, books, videos, audiobooks, etc.

    Of course, do not download anything that is protected by copyright….

    But there is TONS and TONS of stuff that is not copyright protected… and put out there with the request, “Please download this and share it with all your friends!”

    OUR OWN SHOWS are only one example of this — totally FREE and LEGAL content…

    bittorrent_logo_168x168.jpg

    Check out this guide I wrote, called, “How to Download Everything you Want for Free — a beginners guide to downloading the movies, tv, music, books, and audiobooks you want”

    It is here, “How to Download Everything you Want for Free”….. http://brucewagner.com/free

    And please spread the word — forward this message on to all your friends…

    bittorrent-torrents-by-category.jpg

    UPDATE: Now that I have scrapped Windows and Mac, and instead only use Ubuntu… BitTorrent is built-in to the operating system. This is so so slick. No need to install a program like uTorrent any more — because Ubuntu comes with BitTorrent clients, Transmission and Deluge, built-in. (see Windows vs. Ubuntu’s Best Applications)

    See Also: How to Not Get Sued for File Sharing

    And here is an email response I got today…

    Bruce,

    I forwarded your email to a friend of mine and this is what he had to say about it.

    BitTorrent, the software Bruce is touting, is one of many Peer-To-Peer (P2P) file sharing applications available in the murky world of cyberspace. Once you have downloaded and installed a P2P client, if you are connected to the Internet you can launch the utility and are then logged into a central indexing server. This central server indexes all users who are currently online and connected to the server. This server does not necessarily host any files for downloading. The P2P client will contain an area where you can search for a specific file. The utility queries the index server to find other connected users with the file you are looking for. When a match is found the central server will tell you where to find the requested file. You can then choose a result from the search query and your utility will then attempt to establish a connection with the computer hosting the file you have requested. If a successful connection is made, you will begin downloading the file. Once the file download is complete the connection will be broken.

    The technology was devised initially to share (illegally) music files but many providers have long since gone belly-up due to copyright infringement problems and increased cyber enforcement and fines. I’m leery of installing P2P software on my system mainly from a security standpoint. This stems primarily from the architecture itself. Most blocking and routing is handled by a specific server within a network, but the P2P architecture has no single fixed server responsible for routing and/or security. Thus, I’m not willing to install the client program and don’t wish to be tied into a peer-to-peer network.

    I know that most people say P2P programs are free and legal, but it’s always with the caveat (as in Bruce’s email) ‘do not download copyright material’. While this is all fine and dandy, that is really what people are searching for and hence the popularity of these programs. My advice is to steer clear but advice like anything else is only worth what you paid for it which in this case is nothing… :-)

    Some good comments.

    Here is my reply…..

    BitTorrent is only a technology… just like Email…… or Skype….

    It’s only illegal if you use if for illegal purposes.

    If you transmit illegal files via email or skype…. It’s EXACTLY the same thing…

    (1) BitTorrent technology is new, and does NOT have a central indexing server. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bittorrent )

    bittorrent.gif

    (2) The BitTorrent technology did NOT originate with illegal file sharing, nor music sharing. He may be referring to Napster, Kazaa, eDonkey, eMule, etc.

    BitTorrent was NOT created for illegal file sharing… (in spite of the fact that many people DO use it for that today…) Read some of the writings of Bram Cohen, the creator of BitTorrent.

    (3) On November 23, 2005, the movie industry and BitTorrent Inc., whose CEO is the creator of BitTorrent, Bram Cohen, signed a deal to work together. They are licensing this distribution method for the LEGAL distribution of movies, music, etc.

    (4) This statement: “Most blocking and routing is handled by a specific server within a network, but the P2P architecture has no single fixed server responsible for routing and/or security. Thus, I’m not willing to install the client program and don’t wish to be tied into a peer-to-peer network.”

    ….is simply not accurate. Actually, on your home computer… blocking, routing, and security is handled by your router. If you have a software firewall, that does security blocking too (which is redundant and not needed).

    No software, or website, or anything you use online… has a “single fixed server responsible for routing and/or security”. Only YOUR ROUTER is responsible for routing and/or security (and, if you have one, your software firewall does some unnecessary security too).

    (5) The sentiment, I “don’t wish to be tied into a peer-to-peer network.” …..is a misunderstanding of terms.

    Bittorrent, and peer-to-peer file sharing too, and skype too, and Yahoo Instant Messaging, and email…. and anything else that is sending stuff from one computer to another…. is NOT a “peer-to-peer network”.

    A “peer-to-peer network” is entirely a different thing.

    Bottom Line: Use it. Just don’t download anything copyright protected. Simple.

    Soon, EVERYTHING important will be distributed and broadcast via bittorrent. Mark my words!

    bittorrent.jpg

    Also….

    BitTorrent, the software Bruce is touting, is one of many Peer-To-Peer (P2P) file sharing applications available in the murky world of cyberspace.

    Bittorrent is a protocol — not an application. The Bittorrent protocol is used by dozens of programs.

    The program I recommend is called, uTorrent (see utorrent.com).

    Once you have downloaded and installed a P2P client, if you are connected to the Internet you can launch the utility and are then logged into a central indexing server… etc…

    What he is describing…. is how Kazaa, and all the other first-generation P2P file sharing protocols, work.

    This is NOT how Bittorrent works.

    Bittorrent does NOT have any central server. There is NO list, anywhere, of all users currently online. There is NO list, anywhere, of all content available.

    A much better example of how bittorrent works is: Like doing a Send File from within Yahoo Messenger, or Skype, or AOL IM, or MSN Messenger, etc. It’s a file transfer from one computer to another.

    There is a “traffic cop” which tells your software who to connect to… But there is NO CENTRAL SERVER. In fact, there are thousands of “traffic cops”… (called trackers)… and you can even host your own.

    By using uTorrent, or any Bittorrent program, YOU ARE NOT GIVING ANYONE ACCESS TO YOUR COMPUTER. You are NOT creating a “network” with any other computers — no more than if you sent an email to 20 people. And they all replied to each other.

    In fact, NO OTHER USER can even change the CONTENTS of the file(s) you are downloading! ….only the originator.

    But, this is why I recommend that you DO NOT download PROGRAMS or SOFTWARE. They can contain viruses.

    On the other hand….. Downloading public domain pictures, videos, music, audio, books, audiobooks, etc… are completely safe (virus free).

    It’s the SAME as opening email attachments…

    NEVER download a program (an executable file of any type — like .exe .com .scr ….etc.) — even from someone you TRUST! (They probably don’t even KNOW that they are infected!)

    Stick to free public domain movies, videos, music, tv shows, books, and audiobooks (with SAFE exentions like .jpg .gif .png .tif .txt. pdf .avi .wmv .iso .dvr-ms …etc.)

    Many of the biggest television networks — like, is it NBC? — are actively putting their content on Bittorrent.

    BECAUSE THEY WANT YOU TO DOWNLOAD AND WATCH THEIR CONTENT (including the commercials ;) )

    Basically, Bittorrent is a lot like YouTube….. only MUCH MUCH better… Enjoy!

    And, PLEASE…. people… Correct me if I am wrong!

    Save Money & the Earth: Recharge AA Batteries

    Filed under: Environment, Technology — Bruce @ 10:07 am

    More and more devices require AA batteries.

    On the new computers, the mouse and keyboard are wireless… and so is the Media Center remote control… So, on ONE COMPUTER SYSTEM, that’s a total of 8 AA batteries required!

    And I use the computer so much… that

    We just bought the Duracell “15-Minute” charger & rechargeable batteries.

    We figure that it will do BOTH — help the environment by not having to throw all those dead batteries away, AND save us lots of money buying those expensive AA batteries…

    Skype’s New Pricing: Can you be any more Vague?

    Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 9:55 pm

    On January 4th, I reported that…

    Skype had just recently announced…

    That they are going to be announcing soon

    That their announcement will be as follows…

    On January 18th 2007 we will announce an innovative and disruptive pricing structure to give Skype users even more exciting and cost effective ways to keep in touch.

    Our new pricing plan includes a connection fee for all SkypeOut calls ranging from 0,000 to 0,039 (excluding VAT). The new connection fee will not apply to SkypeOut calls within the US or Canada if you have subscribed to the Unlimited Calling plan. This change be effective from January 18th, 2007.

    I did read this at that time… and I didn’t notice anything odd…

    Until today.

    I just read it again… Did you notice that they never used the phrase, “per minute”…

    They say that there will be a new “connection fee”… but they never say “per minute”.

    Hello… ?

    Skype

    Does this mean that the new “connection fee” will be in addition to the current “per minute” fees…?

    Or… Does this mean that the new “connection fee” will replace the current “per minute” fees…?

    Because…

    If there is a new one-connection-fee-per-call (of zero to 4 cents per call), and no per-minute-fees

    Now, THAT will be “disruptive” pricing…!

    Any companies still charging for international long distance calls are gonna really be hurting soon…

    Note: When referring to these rates, we are talking about calling out… to regular phone numbers – i.e. landline phones and mobile/cellular phones, etc. Calls from Skype user to Skype user, worldwide, are always totally free!

    UPDATE – January 18, 2007: See my new post today, Details of Skype’s New Domestic Calling Plans

    An AWESOME Idea for Friends & Family!

    Filed under: Love, Technology — Bruce @ 1:14 pm

    I told my friend Leigh what to get everyone for Christmas…

    And he DID it… :-O

    He took my advice…

    (Why am I so surprised when someone takes my advice!? Ha ha)

    I had told him to…

    1. Download Skype 3.0 and burn copies of it to a bunch of CD-Rs… then
    2. Buy a bunch of $29 web cams and $2 stand microphones…. then
    3. Bundle each together with a nice letter… Telling them how to install them…

    So that all of his family and friends can instantly be on Skype

    Isn’t that an awesome idea!

    Now 100% of his friends and family are video conferencing 100% free — all over the world — using Skype!

    ~~~
    Notes:
    1. You can get a table stand microphone (not the USB type, just a plain old “mic” jack) from any computer store’s clearance rack for about $2. They work great! Headsets are not necessary, nor even preferable (by me)… unless you are talking in a very noisy, or very public, environment. Headsets are cumbersome, uncomfortable, and ugly. The desk stand microphone I use is a Labtec AM-252 NCAT. I bought it for $2, on the clearance rack, at MicroCenter.
    2. You can buy the cheapest web cam available at any computer store for about $29 or less. (I bought several — including the most expensive one at $129, and the cheapest one for $29. No one I video conferenced with could tell any difference in the quailty… so I returned the $129 one!) The webcam will have a USB connector.
    3. I recommend not getting a web cam with a built-in microphone. When the microphone is built in to the camera, it is too far away from your mouth… therefore the sound quality is not good. Remember, you cannot move the microphone if it is built in to the camera!
    4. Although I generally am not a fan of anything sold at Radio Shack, this week they have USB headsets on sale for $9.99. The Gigaware USB Stereo Headset with Microphone has a couple of negative reviews, but apparently it is just a simple Windows setting that fixes the problem. (The solution: You have to turn off the AGC in the advanced audio settings of Windows. AGC- means Automatic Gain Control. This is what mutes the mic.)
    5. Best Buy has the same web cams I use, the Creative Live! Cam Notebook Pro Web Camera for $29.99. (You can use it with any computer that has a USB port. It does not have to be a notebook computer! However, the USB cord is a bit short, so you might want/need to use a USB extension cord with it if you want it mounted on the top of your monitor — like I do.)~
    Tech Support for Friends will Never be the Same
    Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 12:00 pm
    A very cool new free program written specifically as a “plug-in” for Skype, called Unyte, gives you excellent Free Desktop Sharing… and allows you to Be There… Virtually. It’s from a company called WebDialogs.
    With Unyte, you can see the other person’s computer screen… their entire desktop… and (optionally) control their mouse and keyboard… So, while talking with your Mom on the phone or Skype, you can be saying, “Look… Do you see where your mouse is…? When I click in this area… See this menu? Now, you select this option…”, etc., etc…
    There is no better way to teach someone little things about how to use their computer… or some new software… or a new website…
    Of course, if YOU are the one who needs help… it works the other way around too. ; )
    Last evening I had an expert in Avid Liquid (the video editing software I use), who lives in Palm Beach, Florida… showing me some sophisticated video editing techniques… all using Unyte.
    First, download and install Skype. ( Skype is the awesome free telephone & video & instant messaging software I am always raving about.) Next, go to Unyte, and download and install Unyte for free. (You probably don’t need to pay for the Unyte+ version, unless you want 2 or more people to be viewing your shared desktop at the same time (simultaneously). Just download the plain Unyte version for free.)
    Note: It’s the person who’s sharing their desktop (computer) who needs to have Unyte and Skype installed and running. The person viewing and/or temporarily “taking over” the other’s desktop (optionally), does not need to have it installed. (Of course, it hurts nothing if they do both have it installed.)
    Also: You can set sharing settings to allow someone to view your desktop, but not control it… So that you can show someone how to do something using your own desktop… but they take no control of your mouse or keyboard.
    Or… You can allow them to view your desktop and take control of your mouse and keyboard… so that they can show you how to do something… on your own desktop…
    If you want to see and/or control their desktop, then they need to be running Unyte and Skype. And all you need is a web browser.
    Does that all make sense?
    PS — If you go to the Unyte website, and you want to send them a message… Do NOT click on “Send us Feedback” link… It takes you to a Forum where you need to first Create an Account, then compose your message, and THEN you are told that the forum is “Closed to Posting”… If you want to send them any type of message, including general Feedback, you must click on the “Support” link at the top, then on “Send Support Request”… And only THEN, finally…. It takes you to a “Feedback Message” form… (Very Very Bad, WebDialogs people! They need to fix this pronto. And they need to place all of their Company Contact details on their “Company” tab page — like every other legitimate company on the web.)
    Online Backup is Finally Free & Easy to Use
    Filed under: Technology — Bruce @ 11:03 pm
    From Yahoo Tech, New Year’s Resolution: Back Up and Never Lose Data suggests several very easy and effective ways to backup your data.
    And the most exciting method… is one I’ve been predicting for a long, long time… Free online backup. It’s finally here, and free, and large enough to be a realistic solution, and easy to use.
    See 2GB of Free Online Backup? Yes!
    You’re probably getting tired of me harping on you about doing your backups. But I honestly don’t blame you for not wanting to do them. You don’t want to tie up your machine for hours. You don’t want to buy an external hard drive. You don’t understand how to burn DVDs properly. I get it, really I do. But after you read this post you’re going to have no excuse. None. If you have Windows XP and a broadband internet connection, you can start backing up your files online without even the slightest of headaches. If you’re backing up 2GB or less, it’s totally free (making this the only free online backup I’m aware of).
    Mozy is a new service that lets you do your backups via the Internet. Yes, many services like this already exist, but they’re expensive: Old-guard company Xdrive costs $10 a month for 5GB of space. Mozy gives you 2GB of space for free, 5GB for $1.95 a month, and 30GB for $4.95 a month. That blows Xdrive out of the water completely.
    To get started with Mozy, you register and download a small application that stays running on your PC. The Mozy app scans your computer for files you might want to back up, and you can tweak the types you want. (I’m backing up word processing documents but not music, for example.) If you need more control over files and folders, you can drill deeper into advanced options to select backups on a file-by-file basis. Your data is encrypted on Mozy’s site.
    Power users will absolutely love Mozy: You can schedule backups to run constantly, to run only during off hours, to back up open files, and even to throttle bandwidth if the app is running during peak usage times. And yet none of this is complex. Even a novice user should have no trouble setting up Mozy to run only at night.
    The software’s in beta and so it’s still not quite finished. I’d love to see a way to pause a backup in progress, for starters.
    But hey, I’m not complaining. 2GB of free backups, awesome software, and peace of mind? Sign me up, and you should too.
    Feel free to use the referral code 6X2V46 during registration if you decide to give it a spin yourself… and you will get an extra 256MB of free storage space added to your account automatically…
    Additionally, you will receive another gigabyte (1GB) of storage space for every 4 people you refer to Mozy.
    83% of Videos Downloaded from Illegal P2P Sites
    Filed under: Consumer Issues, Life, Technology — Bruce @ 2:38 pm
    Five out of six videos downloaded from the Internet come from illegal peer-to-peer web sites, an ominous sign for an entertainment industry spending big on video download technology.
