Super Easy install of Elgg – rated the number one open source social networking software

UPDATE: (Dec 10, 2008)  I’ve now created a new Elgg Community Support and Development Forum

Mind you, I am an Absolute Beginner with Elgg….

But I just wanted to point this out….

I’ve discovered that GoDaddy.com hosting provides something called ‘Quick Install Apps’….. It’s a free service…. And ELGG is one of their Quick Install Apps…

This means that, with ONE CLICK, you can install Elgg.

I did just that.

It installs the database, the application, and configures everything you need done… all with one single click…. It’s automated.

It installs version 1.0…… But… I was able to upgrade to 1.1 myself easily.

Since their Quick Install installation sets everything up for 1.0, I was able to then upgrade by simply uploading (overwriting) all the files from the version 1.1 ZIP file….. then visiting your  http://you-elgg-site.com/upgrade.php  page. It couldn’t be more simple!!!

( No, I am NOT affiliated with GoDaddy in any way. )

By the way, their ‘deluxe’ hosting plan gives us an UNLIMITED number of web sites. So, if I have 14 domains…. I can have 14 installations of Elgg…. all for about $6.66 per month….. about $0.48 each…

If you have the ‘economy’ hosting plan…. for just one web site…. it’s about $4.75 per month. If you have 2 or more sites, the ‘deluxe’ is a better deal.

Also, the ‘premium’ plan gives you all the same as the ‘deluxe’, UNLIMITED web sites, …plus UNLIMITED storage, plus UNLIMITED bandwidth…

I know I sound like I’m plugging them, but since so many people seem to be looking for cheap Elgg hosting…. and SUPER EASY installation of Elgg…. I just wanted to share this discovery with y’all.

PS – They also offer everything Open Source…. from WordPress to Joomla to you name it… all with easy One Click install.

PPS – I personally think they have the absolute best telephone customer support of any company I’ve ever dealt with — not just tech companies… the best of ANY company. (in my personal experience)
