Skype Hogs CPU even AFTER Exiting Program

Filed under: Uncategorized — Bruce @ 12:19 pm

Ouch!

Even after completely Quiting the Skype program — the NEW RELEASE, Version 3.0 — and I do mean Exit-ing the program COMPLETELY… not just minimizing it… or hiding it…

A process called SkypePM.exe is CONTINUING to take up 40-50% of my CPU cyles…. and this is on a 3.20 GHz DUAL-CORE Intel Pentium (VIIV) processor with 2.0 GB of RAM…

I am running Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002, Service Pack 2…. on this machine, by the way.

According to Phil Wolff of Skype Journal, SkypePM.exe is… “New software that comes with Skype. It runs in the background as skypePM.exe. Programmers talk to it through an API. Users talk to it through the Extras Manager. At the moment, there is no user option for not automatically launching the Extras Manager or the Plug-In Manager.”

This is obviously a big problem.

I have read reports of users seeing Skype take 53 MB of RAM — which is alot — and then SkypePM.exe take another 22 MB… Wow! That’s 75 MB of RAM for one program…

And then for the process (SkypePM.exe) to remain running even AFTER quiting Skype, is insane…

Am I missing something here?
